Making the Most of Your Work-From-Home Workday

Working from home can be either a godsend or potential setback. As remote work becomes more and more popular, it’s important to incorporate a few key elements into each workday to help you reap the most benefits from working in this context.

Morning Routine

Just as a consistent morning routine is critical to a successful in-person job, the same is true for remote work. Waking up at a consistent time, engaging in mindful routines such as meditation or prayer and giving your body a little bit of nourishment (not just coffee) will help you maximize this crucial time of day.

Exercise

Whether you choose to work out first thing in the morning or last thing at night, exercise will help keep your mind and body working their best. If hitting the gym isn’t your thing, a quick jog, bike ride or few minutes of yoga will still be beneficial. Even a walk around the block in the morning or at lunchtime will help stabilize your energy levels throughout the day.

Task Lists

A good old-fashioned to-do list will help keep you on task when your mind wanders during the workday. Keep this list in a prominent place and consider reviewing it first thing in the morning to help set the stage and make effective plans for the day. Maintain realistic goals for each day and ensure you add one or two personal tasks as well, which will encourage you to prioritize your own self-care too.

In addition to all these things, take note of the habits you have which fill you with life and energy each day. You can even take some time to ask others what they do every day to stay on their game when working remotely. Working from home can be a challenge, but with attention given to these pieces of your day, focused work become a little less difficult.
